June 17 Newsletter – Countdown to ISO 14001 & Support

ESHCon regularly sends out an e-newsletter to contacts – here’s the latest from June 2017. Countdown to ISO 14001 & Support Stepping out of your comfort zone Last month I attended edieLive, the UK’s leading two day energy, sustainability and resource efficiency event for businesses. I chaired two sessions, on water management and energy, and I also spoke about how ISO 14001 could help energy managers step out of their comfort zone.   There are many things make a manager uncomfortable & I considered three: Communicating; Risk management; & Other (non energy) activities. Using ISO 14001 helps address each of these issues.   See here for a summary & findings of my sessions.   Because most organisations are still early on in their environmental journey, they need a bit of hand-holding. Hence I use ISO 14001 to give them a formal structure to achieve their objectives.   World Environment Day 5th June was World Environment Day. I saw a lot of tweets & stories, mostly about connecting with nature, so I put...

March 17 Newsletter – Putting the Environment into your Business

ESHCon regularly sends out an e-newsletter to contacts – here’s the latest from March 2017. Putting the Environment into your Business   Celebrating my 5th Anniversary When I first set up ESHCon I was part-time, continuing with a job while I built up the business. But five years ago I took the plunge to go full time. I’ve really enjoyed it - interesting clients, great projects, lots of learning, making opportunities - good times! Thank you to my partners & clients who’ve been with me along the way. To help me celebrate, how about some of my favourite Champagne Truffles from Fortnum & Mason? Email me to say hello & you’ll go into the prize draw (closes 3rd April).   Green Growth 17 - Report from the Chair I was very pleased to chair the recent Green Growth 17 Conference in Brighton. Speakers included Jon Khoo from Interface and Mike Barry from M&S – whose suppliers that prove & improve their own credentials get more business. With 180 delegates,...

January 17 Newsletter – Environment in your Business

ESHCon regularly sends out an e-newsletter to contacts – here’s the latest from January 2017. Environment in your Business   GHG Reporting Are you preparing your carbon footprint for the past year? Companies listed on the London Stock Exchange must include emissions data in their Annual Reports. It can be a little overwhelming, especially if you have overseas sites. To make it easier for you, I can make your calculations or indeed validate your own work.   Make sure you’ve got all the right data - energy & fuel in buildings, company cars etc. Is it complete (missing sites, one departments’ travel)? Make sure it’s correct (anomalies investigated, correct emissions factors used).   Rather than handling all the data themselves, one of my clients finds it particularly useful to trickle the info through to me when it comes in from various offices. I collate, validate & calculate.   F-Gas Inspections Equipment containing F-Gas fluorinated greenhouse gases must be inspected for leaks on a regular basis, depending on their size, also type...

Dec 16 Newsletter – Environmental Business

Dec 16 Newsletter – Environmental Business

ESHCon regularly sends out an e-newsletter to contacts – here’s the latest from December 2016.   Welcome to the latest ESHCon Newsletter. It’s been an unusual year hasn’t it? In politics, business and the environmental world. For me, I spent most of the year on 3 elements: ESOS energy projects, the new ISO 14001 standard and taking on the chairmanship of Gatwick Diamond Business. We are in a period of uncertainty arising from Brexit & US elections, which will affect our businesses in the short term & beyond. We need to understand & act upon the risks we face, & also the opportunities presented to us. Even more so now, in our industries, communities & organisations, collaboration is key. Working together, sharing good practice, making connections & referrals - these will all help in these uncertain times. I look forward to an excellent 2017. In the meantime, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Need some inspiration for greening the festive...

Oct 16 Newsletter – Successes & Opportunities

ESHCon regularly sends out an e-newsletter to contacts – here’s the latest from October 2016. Successes & Opportunities Staff Engagement is Critical A survey by @edie of energy managers discussed the challenges faced and their next planned activities. The main barriers to putting in energy efficiency projects were found to be funding 62%, right technology 32% & problems engaging staff 32%. Their focus for energy management initiatives next will be lighting 76%, engaging staff 65% and BMS (building management systems) 56%. I found the results rather interesting, especially in terms of engaging staff. This is really critical to achieve success - both in terms of raising awareness amongst the wider workforce and targeted training for key teams or personnel, including management. ISO 14001 Success Roband Electronics is pleased to announce that its EMS has been successfully recertified and this time to the new ISO 14001:2015 standard. ESHCon guided Roband through the transition process starting with an ISO 14001 Gap Analysis. Hear Me Speak - Business Growth Opportunities I...

Aug 16 Newsletter – Uncertainties, Risks & Opportunities

ESHCon regularly sends out an e-newsletter to contacts – here’s the latest from August 2016. Uncertainties, Risks & Opportunities EU Referendum It’s been a rollercoaster few weeks following the EU Referendum. With all the changes in political leadership, the dramatic fall in sterling and talk of threatened inward investment, there are so many uncertainties for businesses now. From a compliance point of view, until we know what the trade situation will be, we won’t see material changes to the legal framework. And while we’re still a member, we have to abide by EU legislation & any directives waiting to be transposed into UK law will still need to be done. But now is a good time to look at your business and try to anticipate how this will affect you. Think about things in both the short & medium term - material and energy costs (likely to rise due to uncertain supplies & poor exchange rate), labour availability, compliance obligations (international or local requirements) and...

10 Years

10 Years

ESHCon 10 Years and Counting! I’m proud to say that this year ESHCon will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. Wow, where has the time gone? 10 years of environmental management consultancy, working with such a range of interesting businesses, from micros to multi-nationals.   I’ve been chatting with several people recently who are thinking about setting up their own business. They were interested in my approach, how I’d established the business and good client base.   Now, of course, I’m no expert in this but I thought I’d jot down some of my thoughts on the past 10 years into a few bullet points.   Don’t be afraid to start - this could hold you back at first, but you just need to start… now!   Love what you do; do what you love - this is clear for me. I am passionate about my work which raises quality and customer satisfaction.   Get a mentor - this was really useful for me to plan my business and...

Feb 16 Newsletter – ESOS – Are we there yet?

ESHCon regularly sends out an e-newsletter to contacts – here’s the latest from February 2016. ESOS – Are we there yet? I’ve been working with a number of clients to ensure they comply with the ESOS legislation. We’ve analysed energy consumption data (buildings & transport), conducted audits & identified opportunities for reduction. OK, we’ve met the deadline – does this mean it’s all over? Is that ESOS done for four years?  Well no because now the fun part starts: putting the energy savings opportunities into action. So, why not get your colleagues together & run a workshop? Have a good brainstorm, look at the recommendations and develop an action plan: small & maybe larger projects, with timescales & responsibilities; set your priorities and link to targets & KPIs. It’s also a good idea to schedule audits for all sites, to be done over the next 3 years (to fit in with the ESOS cycle). This is especially important to visit all sites if only a...

June 15 Newsletter

ESHCon regularly sends out an e-newsletter to contacts – here’s the latest from June 2015. Time Flies! ESOS – 6 Months and Counting With less than 6 months until the deadline for the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme, businesses need to get going now. The final date to notify the Env Agency of your compliance is 5th December.   There are 3 stages to ESOS: measure energy consumption, conduct energy audits & report compliance. Remember even if you’re not a large company, you may still need to participate in ESOS because of others in your corporate group.   As the clock is ticking, you should now be collating energy & transport data for your reporting period (1 year covering 31st Dec 14). Data should be in kWh for elec/gas, litres for fuels, maybe miles for business travel – and it needs to be validated. Many companies are finding this a bit of challenge, especially transport.   Next schedule the energy audits for early summer & plan your work in time...
