New ISO 14001 Standard
Fanfare please – ISO 14001:2026 is here!

Who loves a bit of ISO standards revision? After a full review, the new ISO 14001:2026 is published today.
ISO 14001 key changes
It’s not a complete rewrite, rather in builds upon and improves the previous version, to improve clarity, usability and environmental impact.
From systems to outcomes –
There is now a stronger emphasis on environmental performance, not just management processes – how does the EMS drive measurable improvements. Leadership accountability is clearer, with tighter links between environmental governance, wider business strategy and risk management.
Climate, biodiversity and context –
EMSs should already include climate change, but this should be more specific now in setting the “context of the organisation”. They must now consider a wider range of environmental conditions – including biodiversity, climate, pollution and availability of natural resources – when identifying risks and opportunities.
Clearer risk, change and governance requirements –
There are two new clauses on managing risks and opportunities, and for planning change within the organisation. Both link nicely to wider business practices, rather than viewing the EMS in isolation from the board’s activities.
Stronger lifecycle and supply‑chain focus –
There is now a greater emphasis on lifecycle, showing more structured consideration of impacts across the value chain, from sourcing and design through to transport, use and end‑of‑life. Operational controls now explicitly cover externally provided processes, products and services.
If you already have an ISO 14001 EMS in place, don’t worry, it won’t be immediately out of date. There will be a three‑year transition period, but it’s a good idea to start with a Gap Analysis and then plan changes needed.
