Di Gilpin, an expert in the history of knitwear and hand knitting techniques, has used traditional gansey stitches, including a classic tree of life in Shetland lace on the back of the mittens. This pattern was a motif used in ganseys from the island of Eriskay to symbolise the landmarks that fishermen at sea scoured the horizon for.
