Staff Engagement is Critical
A survey by @edie of energy managers discussed the challenges faced and their next planned activities. The main barriers to putting in energy efficiency projects were found to be funding 62%, right technology 32% & problems engaging staff 32%. Their focus for energy management initiatives next will be lighting 76%, engaging staff 65% and BMS (building management systems) 56%.
I found the results rather interesting, especially in terms of engaging staff. This is really critical to achieve success – both in terms of raising awareness amongst the wider workforce and targeted training for key teams or personnel, including management.
ISO 14001 Success
Roband Electronics is pleased to announce that its EMS has been successfully recertified and this time to the new ISO 14001:2015 standard. ESHCon guided Roband through the transition process starting with an ISO 14001 Gap Analysis.

The Gatwick Diamond Business Awards are now open for entry, with plenty of categories including Green Business & Responsible Business. Get thinking about your entry & apply by 18th November.

I’ve also been recently judging the national Sustainability Leaders Awards and the judges had some good discussions. The shortlists will be released soon & the winners announced at the awards ceremony on 27th January at the Park Lane Hilton.
In April 2017 the water industry is being deregulated in England and Wales. So, as with electricity and gas supply, businesses will be able to choose their own water provider. By having a choice of provider, it is expected that customers will see savings, discounts and more attractive payment terms, plus providers are likely to help you improve water efficiency.

Paris Agreement to be Ratified
The Paris Agreement, which will enter into force on 4 November, has been hailed as a “truly historic moment” in the fight against climate change, which could eventually go down in history as “the most impactful multilateral treaty of all time”.
Getting over 190 countries to agree this at the COP21 meeting in Paris last December involved a great deal of negotiation. The Agreement “emphasises with serious concern” the need to hold the increase in the global average temperature to “well below 2C” above pre-industrial levels, and “pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5C”. Considering the latest figures from the Met Office show that global temperatures have already reached 1.1C, there is renewed urgency on this matter.Already ratified by USA, China, India and the EU, the Prime Minister has May vowed that the UK will have officially ratified it by the end of 2016.
So what does this mean to business? In order for countries to contribute to maintaining global temperatures, significant carbon emissions restrictions are anticipated. Many companies are adopting Science Based Targets, which understand how their industry sectors must adapt. At least through ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, your risks and opportunities assessments will need to consider these national emissions targets, security of energy supply and medium-long term energy costs.
