Putting the Environment into your Business
Celebrating my 5th Anniversary
When I first set up ESHCon I was part-time, continuing with a job while I built up the business. But five years ago I took the plunge to go full time. I’ve really enjoyed it – interesting clients, great projects, lots of learning, making opportunities – good times! Thank you to my partners & clients who’ve been with me along the way.
To help me celebrate, how about some of my favourite Champagne Truffles from Fortnum & Mason? Email me to say hello & you’ll go into the prize draw (closes 3rd April).
Green Growth 17 – Report from the Chair
I was very pleased to chair the recent Green Growth 17 Conference in Brighton. Speakers included Jon Khoo from Interface and Mike Barry from M&S – whose suppliers that prove & improve their own credentials get more business.
With 180 delegates, it provided a good mixture of inspiration, practical advice & opportunities to network. Here are some of the key points I noted during the day.
One issue is to make it easy for customers to trust you & then buy from you – demonstrate your environmental credentials (e.g. with an EMS).
Carbon Emission Reductions Bill
After the UK ratified the Paris Agreement, a new Bill is going through parliament to amend our current national target on carbon emissions to be net zero by 2050. This substantial commitment will see future changes to enable businesses & communities to seriously act to reduce their emissions.
Although no agreements yet, it is likely to see increased charging for energy, additional carbon reporting and specific targets & limits. Now is the time to prepare to make best use of the opportunities.
Deadline for ISO 14001
Organisations with an EMS have just 18 months until the deadline to get certified to the new ISO 14001 standard. Don’t rush it at the last minute, give yourself time to do it properly – it’ll be easier & more rewarding.
Read here how I helped Roband Electronics successfully certify to ISO 14001:2015 – starting with a Gap Analysis, then updating the system, before assisting with the certification audit.
Toxicity Charge to tackle London’s air pollution
With air pollution causing such problems, the Mayor of London has launched a £10 toxicity charge aimed at the oldest, most polluting vehicles on London roads. Starting in October, this ‘T Charge’ applies mainly to diesel & petrol vehicles registered before 2006 & will operate on top of the Congestion Charge (Monday to Friday 7am-6pm); so it will cost £21.50 to drive in the zone.
UK’s carbon emissions fall (slightly)
The UK’s 2015 GHG figures have been recently published, showing a year-on-year reduction of 4% (due to less coal used in power stations). However there is a 2% increase in transport & 4% in residential emissions.
Gatwick Diamond Business Awards
Another glittering awards ceremony for me! Many congratulations to all the winners of the Gatwick Diamond Business Awards (announced on Thursday).
A range of categories including Green Business & Responsible Business of the Year. Did you know that I set up the Green Business Awards many years ago & merged them with the GDB Awards to reach a wider audience?
Earth Hour – 8:30pm on 25th March
Around the globe, millions of people, businesses and landmarks set aside an hour to host events, switch off their lights and make noise for climate change action. Why not get your business involved? Great for staff awareness.
